If you live in the Oswego school district, there's a big question on your ballot: should Oswego Community Unit School District 308 issue $317 million in bonds to fix up its buildings? The district blames "decades of deferred maintenance and aging building systems."
The district says the referendum is designed to lower the homeowner tax rate. It's retiring existing long-term debt, so homeowners would see a property tax decrease even if voters approve it. Oswego isn't the only district asking: NBC 5 Chicago lists a request in Community School District 300, which includes parts of Kane County, for more than $355 million in bonds.
- Board put it on the ballot: Aug. 10
- Systems last replaced: 20 to 25 years ago, per the district
- Work: roofing, HVAC, plumbing, science labs, secure entryways
District 300's bond request tops Oswego's
