- ➤ Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora will bless students’ backpacks and adults’ work bags at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17 — a service that will be followed by a fellowship hour. The church is also collecting extra backpacks to help community members in need as the new school year approaches. Daily Herald
- ➤ Mike and Mary Schroeck have partnered with DuPage Foundation to start a permanent grant fund that will help local nonprofits fight food shortage and housing problems. They have given a lot to groups like Hesed House, Loaves & Fishes and Brightside Theatre—showing their deep commitment to the community. Daily Herald

- ➤ Blackjack’s Gentlemen’s Club in St. Charles Township requested a review of its liquor license denial and threatened to sue Kane County for a First Amendment violation after a tie vote led to the decision; the commission will reconsider the request today at 11:30 a.m. at the Government Center—following heated comments and a disputed vote in June.
