- ➤ Illinois will start its new budget laws on July 1, which will raise the gas tax to about 48 cents per gallon (diesel to about 56 cents) and add new taxes on sports wagers, tobacco and short-term rentals. The law also bans small single-use plastic bottles in hotels with 50 or more rooms and increases Chicago’s minimum wage to $16.60 per hour for companies with four or more employees. NBC Chicago
