A homeowner was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and three pets died in an Aurora duplex fire early Monday—firefighters controlled the blaze despite several other pets remaining unaccounted for as the cause remains under investigation.

Mediacom Communications awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Juan-Pablo Valencia, a senior at Aurora Central Catholic, for his leadership and academic excellence—this marks the 24th year the company has supported 60 local graduating seniors who must attend an accredited college or technical school.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias warned residents after scam texts threatened to suspend vehicle registration and driving privileges by falsely claiming to come from the DMV — these messages are phishing attempts to secure personal or financial information.
The office stressed that only appointment reminders are sent and urged residents to report any suspicious contact.
