Chad Clarey is a first grade teacher at Grace McWayne Elementary and a cross country coach at Kaneland High who also leads volunteer efforts at Marklund Hyde Center.

Inspired by mentors to pursue teaching and coaching, he has earned awards for his service — he continues to bring local students and athletes to volunteer opportunities.

Local thank you letters sent to teachers in Kane County praise educators for kindness, humor and dedication across elementary and middle schools.

The letters include one note about a teacher’s recent house fire and show heartfelt support — notes from students and parents — that honor their work.

Gemma Gurney of Central High School was named 2025 Kane County Educator of the Year at an awards banquet held May 2 at the Q Center in St. Charles — she dedicated the honor to her students, colleagues and family.

Ivars Spalis began his teaching career as a substitute at Aurora West High School and moved to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles, where he has worked for over 26 years and has been principal since 2014.

He supports students with academic and social-emotional lessons — believing in second chances.
