About this event

The Chief Fire Officer course is the highest level of Chief Fire Officer Certification Training in the State of Illinois. This course replaces Fire Officer III and meets all the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1020, Fire Officer III and IV (2025).

The Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors’ Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Blended course is for Fire Officers who are working at or wish to work at the level of a Chief Fire Officer and Senior Leader within your organization. Students who have yet to achieve the rank of Chief Fire Officer will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge, skills and abilities to both succeed in this course and learn to lead at a higher level. Senior Leaders completing the course will learn to solve problems and make critical decisions beyond their present position. This dynamic course focuses on leadership and decision making at every level of the fire service. Our CFO course focuses on the newest, most current and contemporary training, education and professional development. This exciting curriculum exceeds standards of the past while training Chief Officers, Senior Leaders, and Staff Officers of the future.

The Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors (Society) CFO course is scheduled in three Phases, similar to the Company Fire Officer & Advanced Fire Officer Program. Phase 1 and Phase 2 will be facilitated by the Society instructor cadre through a series of in-person classroom sessions and online modules. Phase 3 consists of each student independently completing their OSFM Taskbook after Society Phase(s) 1 and 2 are successfully accomplished. The Taskbook must be a compilation of the student’s real world experiences and corresponding documentation. This course meets all IL OSFM requirements for certification and is correlated to NFPA 1021: Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications (2025). This course equates to 400+ hours of material.

Program modules include topics such as: Leadership, Professional Development, Human Resources, Legal Issues, Intergovernmental Relations, Budget& Finance Issues, Strategic Planning, Community Risk Reduction, Managing Code Enforcement Emergency Response and Emergency Management.
